Power Automate.
Power Automate is Microsoft's workflow automation service, covering both cloud flows across Microsoft 365 and other services and desktop flows that drive applications through their user interface as a person would.
Where Power Automate fits on a long engagement.
Inside a Microsoft estate the integration is difficult to beat. Approvals in Teams, flows triggered from SharePoint or Outlook, and identity already handled mean automation that people encounter where they already work rather than in another tool.
Desktop flows are the robotic process automation half, and they are inherently brittle: driving an application through its interface breaks when the interface changes. They are the right answer only where a system genuinely has no API, and they need an owner who expects to repair them.
What an assigned team does with Power Automate.
Desktop flows break whenever the application they drive changes, which makes them a maintenance commitment rather than a delivery. Building one without budgeting for its repair is how organisations end up with automation they no longer trust.
Governance across hundreds of individually-built flows is the larger problem in most Microsoft estates, and it is assigned alongside platform capacity under DevOps as a service.
What we use Power Automate for.
- Approvals where people already are Routing and sign-off inside Teams and Outlook rather than in a system nobody opens.
- Automating a system with no API Desktop flows driving a legacy application, with the fragility understood and planned for.
- Governing flow sprawl Bringing order to hundreds of flows built by individuals, including the ones owned by people who have left.
How Power Automate capacity is assigned.
Assigned under AI automation engineering, alongside Azure capacity where the estate is the wider constraint.
