Xray.
Xray is a test management application inside Jira. Test cases, plans, executions and results are Jira issues, so coverage links directly to requirements and defects without a separate tool to reconcile.
Where Xray fits on a long engagement.
Keeping test management in Jira removes a synchronisation problem rather than adding a feature. When tests are issues, the link from requirement to test to defect is native, and nobody maintains a mapping between two systems that inevitably drift apart.
Traceability is the reason it appears in regulated work. Being able to demonstrate which tests cover which requirement, when they last ran and what the result was, is an audit requirement in several sectors, and assembling that by hand from separate tools is expensive and error-prone.
What an assigned team does with Xray.
Test management adds administrative weight, and whether that is justified depends entirely on the regulatory and organisational context. A team with no audit requirement often gets more value from tests in the repository next to the code.
Making that judgement honestly rather than defaulting to process is part of test strategy, assigned under qa outsourcing.
What we use Xray for.
- Coverage traced to requirements A native link from requirement to test to defect, with no mapping to maintain.
- Automation results in the same place Pipeline results reported into Jira, so one view covers manual and automated coverage.
- Audit evidence without assembly Execution history available on demand rather than reconstructed from several tools.
How Xray capacity is assigned.
Test management is adopted where traceability is genuinely required rather than by default. That judgement is made at scoping, as described in how an assignment runs.
