PHP is a server-side language powering a large share of the web, including WordPress, Magento and Laravel applications. Modern PHP is strictly typed, fast, and substantially different from its reputation.

PHP 8 is a different language from the one its reputation is based on. Strict types, attributes, enums, JIT compilation and a mature tooling ecosystem make a modern PHP codebase comparable to any other server-side stack. Dismissing it on reputation is a mistake; most of the internet runs on it.
The distribution of real codebases is bimodal. Modern, typed, tested applications on supported versions sit alongside estates on unsupported versions with no autoloading and SQL assembled by string concatenation. The version and the practices matter far more than the language.

Legacy PHP estates usually carry security debt rather than only technical debt. Unsupported versions receive no patches, and older code frequently predates the practices that prevent injection and session attacks.
