Expo is a framework and build service around React Native providing a managed native layer, cloud builds, over-the-air updates and a large set of maintained native modules. It removes most direct contact with Xcode and Gradle for teams that want it removed.

Expo's value is the elimination of native build maintenance. Cloud builds mean no local toolchain to keep current, config plugins express native changes declaratively, and over-the-air updates let a JavaScript fix reach users without a store review. For a small team that is a substantial reduction in operational surface.
The historical objection — that you had to eject to do anything native — is largely gone, since config plugins and development builds cover most cases. What remains is a dependency on Expo's release cadence and module coverage, and a build pipeline you do not own. Both are reasonable trades for many products and unacceptable for a few.

Over-the-air updates change the release conversation. A JavaScript-only fix can ship in minutes, which is genuinely useful and which teams overuse until the store binary and what users are running have drifted apart in ways nobody is tracking.
Keeping that disciplined is a delivery-process question rather than a tooling one, and it belongs with the rest of the release path under devops as a service.
