Talend.
Talend is a data integration platform with a graphical job designer that generates Java. It covers ETL, data quality and governance, and is used both in cloud-managed and self-hosted forms.
Where Talend fits on a long engagement.
Generating Java from a visual design is Talend's distinguishing property. Jobs run as ordinary Java, which means they can be deployed anywhere a JVM runs and can call arbitrary Java where the visual components run out — a genuinely useful escape hatch that purely declarative tools lack.
Visual jobs are difficult to review. A diff of a Talend job is a diff of generated XML, which tells a reviewer very little about what actually changed. That pushes teams toward reviewing in the designer rather than in the repository, which weakens the review discipline applied to everything else.
What an assigned team does with Talend.
Jobs built graphically over years accumulate the same debt as code, with less visibility. Duplicated subjobs, components configured inconsistently, and logic embedded in a single component nobody opens are all normal and all invisible in a listing.
Bringing that under the same standards as application code is ordinary discipline, held by the assigned specialists as part of an agreed committed monthly capacity.
What we use Talend for.
- Java where the components stop Custom logic dropped into a generated job, without leaving the platform.
- Jobs deployed like any artefact Generated code running wherever a JVM does, inside normal deployment tooling.
- Review discipline applied to visual jobs Standards and documentation that survive the fact that diffs are unreadable.
How Talend capacity is assigned.
Talend work is assigned inside data engineering capacity, with generated jobs held to the same review and deployment standards as application code.
