Metabase is a business intelligence tool with a visual query builder for non-technical users, SQL for analysts, dashboards, alerts and row-level permissions. It is straightforward to deploy and to learn.
Where Metabase fits on a long engagement.
Metabase lowers the barrier to asking a data question, which is its main contribution. A non-technical user can build a chart without SQL, which reduces the analyst queue and lets people answer their own questions — the thing every BI deployment claims and few achieve.
The trade-off is governance. Self-service without defined metrics produces several versions of the same number, each built by someone making reasonable but different choices. Metabase's modelling layer helps, but it is lighter than the enterprise tools, so the discipline has to come from how it is used.
What an assigned team does with Metabase.
Permissions need designing before data is exposed, not after. Row-level rules and sandboxing exist, and they need to be configured deliberately, because the default of broad access is convenient and wrong for most organisations.
