dimensional design.
Dimensional design organises analytical data into facts — the measurable events — and dimensions — the context describing them. It produces models that are fast to query and comprehensible to people who did not build them.
Where dimensional design fits on a long engagement.
The reason dimensional models persist is comprehensibility. An analyst who understands facts and dimensions can navigate a warehouse they have never seen, because the pattern is consistent. A bespoke model, however elegant, has to be learned by every person who touches it.
Conformed dimensions are the part that delivers organisational value and the part most often skipped. If sales and support each define "customer" separately, their numbers cannot be compared, and the warehouse has reproduced the silos it was meant to remove. Agreeing one definition is a political exercise as much as a technical one.
What an assigned team does with dimensional design.
Getting conformity agreed needs someone with standing across departments, which is not a role an external specialist can occupy. What we can do is build the model correctly once the definitions are settled, and be explicit about which disagreements are blocking.
Direction on definitions stays with you; the delivery against them is what we answer for, which is the division set out in how an assignment runs.
What we use dimensional design for.
- Warehouses an analyst can navigate A consistent pattern, so new people are productive without a tour.
- Conformed dimensions across departments One definition of customer and product, so numbers can be compared.
- Facts at a declared grain Measures stored at one clear level, with aggregation left to the query.
How dimensional design capacity is assigned.
Dimensional modelling is assigned under managed data services, with definitional disagreements surfaced rather than modelled around.
