ChatGPT: The future of work?

The way we work is changing. Technology is advancing rapidly, causing a huge impact on the way we work. We’re seeing automation and artificial intelligence revolutionize the workplace, from customer service to software development. One of these AI-based innovations that is taking the world by storm is the language model, ChatGPT.

With these world-rocking technology advances in recent years, fears of job displacement are becoming more widespread. We’ve spoken with our Heads of Service: Development, Marketing and Customer Service about this. Here’s what we learned.

But first, if you have been living under a rock, here’s a quick recap of what ChatGPT is and why it has been on everyone’s mouth in 2023.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a large language model that uses machine learning to generate natural language responses to prompts or questions. It is trained on massive amounts of data and can answer a wide range of queries with a high degree of accuracy. This technology is often used for tasks such as customer service chatbots, language translation, and content creation. ChatGPT has more than 175 billion parameters, making it among the largest and most powerful language models available.

How do people use ChatGPT?

In November 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT and it quickly became a sensation across the world. From writing personalized poems to crafting elaborate business plans, ChatGPT’s versatility knows no bounds. Need to write a marketing email? No problem. Want to write a school essay in seconds? ChatGPT has got you covered.

One notable user of ChatGPT was actor Ryan Reynolds, who used it to write a commercial for his own company, Mint Mobile. He gave ChatGPT some specific guidelines, including using first-person voice, including a curse word, telling a joke, and promoting an ongoing promotion. ChatGPT did all of those things. It was “mildly terrifying” said Reynolds.

From writing personalized poems to crafting elaborate business plans, ChatGPT’s versatility knows no bounds.

What jobs will ChatGPT replace?

Whenever a new AI tool emerges on the tech scene, people understandably wonder whether that innovation gets so advanced that it makes their jobs obsolete. Even people with highly specialized skills like developers/programmers might face that worry. Instead of speculating, we first asked the OpenAI chatbot itself about the types of jobs it could potentially replace.

ChatGPT provided a comprehensive list of 20 professions. Here’s the top 10.

  1. Data Entry Clerk
  2. Customer Service Representative
  3. Proofreader
  4. Paralegal
  5. Bookkeeper
  6. Translator
  7. Copywriter
  8. Market Research Analyst
  9. Social Media Manager
  10. Appointment Scheduler

The chatbot also outlined the specific traits that it would bring to each of these jobs. For instance, as a replacement for a data entry clerk, the software highlighted its exceptional speed and accuracy. In the case of a proofreader, it emphasized its ability to detect and correct errors quickly and efficiently. Overall, the OpenAI chatbot demonstrated its potential to revolutionize the job market and change the way we work.

Let’s dive in and ask Fai, Mathias and Oliver, our Heads of Service from Development, Marketing and Customer Service if they believe ChatGPT will replace jobs within their fields.

Will ChatGPT replace programmers?

As the Head of Service, Development, I would lie if I said I did not have any concerns about ChatGPT and other AI-technologies replacing jobs in the IT industry. I truly believe that AI can automate some of the repetitive tasks like code optimization, testing, and debugging. This can free up their time to focus on more complex tasks, such as designing software architecture and analyzing complex code problems, which requires human expertise.
In the field of coding and programming, human expertise is essential. Our programmers play a vital role in resolving issues and enhancing the functionality of applications. They apply critical thinking skills to identify and fix bugs and optimize the code for improved performance.

While AI has made significant progress in many areas, it does not possess the human critical thinking skills required to navigate through complicated programming scenarios.

The impact of ChatGPT on the job market will depend on how companies choose to use it. If companies use AI as a tool to enhance developers’ productivity, it will create more job opportunities. But if companies use AI to replace developers, it could negatively impact the job market.

My advice for companies is to strike a balance between utilizing AI tools to enhance productivity and leveraging on human expertise to solve more complex problems.

Mathias Sivertsen

Head of Service, Marketing

Will ChatGPT replace marketers?

In my humble opinion, ChatGPT is not replacing jobs but rather transforming them. I agree with Fai regarding using AI tools to enhance productivity and leveraging human expertise to solve more strategic and complex tasks.

I believe ChatGPT can help automate many repetitive and time-consuming tasks like scheduling social media posts, writing evergreen content and generating keywords. But I do not see ChatGPT being able to replace the essential human touch that is needed to e.g. create personalized campaigns based on the understanding of the customer journey. The human flare, insight, creativity, originality and strategic thinking are essential to create a successful marketing strategy.

My answer might be different a year from now. But at the moment, AI technologies like ChatGPT is not here to take away marketing jobs but rather to augment our skills and help us work more efficiently. At least, this is how and why we are implementing AI here at Azendo.

Oliver Westerberg

Head of Service, Customer Service

Will ChatGPT replace human customer service?

As the Head of Service, Customer Service at Azendo, I have had my fair share of concerns regarding the impact of automation and AI like ChatGPT on human workers in our industry. AI has the potential to revolutionize customer service, and I know it’s already being used by some large companies to e.g. help customers troubleshoot technical issues.

However, the reality is more complex than that.

In customer service, ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for automating responses to common customer inquiries. However, it cannot replace the need for human interaction and empathy. Our dedicated customer service agents and tech supporters at Azendo understand that a customer who is upset or frustrated needs a human representative to listen to their concerns, understand their needs, and offer a solution on those frustrations and needs. ChatGPT can assist with simple inquiries, but it cannot replace the critical role of human customer service representatives in providing exceptional human-to-human service and building strong and long-lasting customer relationships.

So I would say, with the help of AI, we can automate responses to frequently asked questions, allowing human customer service agents to focus on more complex customer issues. This way, we can reduce response time and improve customer satisfaction.

AI and the future of work.

ChatGPT is very good at doing what it is programmed to do, but it is not a silver bullet. While it can perform many tasks with ease, it’s not a substitute for human creativity or critical thinking. Rather, it’s a tool that can help us work more efficiently and effectively.

As professionals, we should continue to hone our skills and develop our abilities. While AI can assist us in many ways, it’s up to us to make the most of it and leverage its potential to drive innovation and growth in our respective industries.

But as with any technology, there are concerns about whether ChatGPT will eventually replace jobs that were traditionally done by humans. It’s a valid concern, but we believe that the key to avoiding this outcome lies in working alongside the technology rather than against it. Rather than fearing the potential loss of our jobs, we should focus on how we can use ChatGPT to augment our skills and make our work even better.
