# What staff augmentation means, and when it stops working.

Staff augmentation means bringing in outside specialists who work under your management, usually to fill a skills gap or cover a stretch of heavy work. It is a real model with real uses. It also gets sold to companies who need something else entirely.

A one-to-one between a service delivery manager and an assigned specialist.

## The staff augmentation meaning, without the sales language

A provider finds you a specialist and handles their employment and payroll. You direct their work day to day, set their priorities, review their output and carry the result. The provider’s involvement largely ends once the person is in place.

That last sentence is the whole model. Everything people like and dislike about the model follows from it.

Providers based in Eastern Europe frequently describe the same arrangement as [outstaffing](https://azendo.co/outstaffing-vs-offshore-staffing/), which causes more confusion in vendor conversations than it should.

## When it is the right call

It works well when the gap is a skill rather than a function. You know what needs building, you have an engineering lead with time to direct someone, and the work has a foreseeable end. In that situation it is faster and cheaper than the alternatives, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.

If you are comparing suppliers rather than models, the differences between a [staff augmentation agency](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/staff-augmentation-agency/), a freelance marketplace and a managed delivery partner are set out separately.

## Where the model breaks

It strains when the missing thing is not a person but a function. If nobody on your side has the hours to manage another specialist, the model hands you a second problem alongside the first.

It also strains on continuity. Because the relationship is with an individual, the knowledge leaves when they do. Teams that augment for two years often find themselves back where they started, having paid the whole time.

Larger organisations sometimes reach for an [offshore development center](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/what-is-an-offshore-development-center/) instead, which is a different structure again and suits a different size of programme.

And accountability never moves. If the augmented specialist underperforms, that is your outcome to explain, not the provider’s.

Providers who sell this model usually market it as [IT staff augmentation services](https://azendo.co/it-staff-augmentation-services/), and the comparison worth making is not between vendors but between models.

## Compared with a managed service

| Compared | Staff augmentation | Managed service |
| ---------------------- | -------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| What you buy | A person’s time | A team’s delivery |
| Who manages daily | You | The provider |
| Who answers for output | You | The provider |
| If someone leaves | Product knowledge goes with them | Held by the provider’s team |
| Best fit | A defined short gap | Ongoing work you would rather stop managing |

## What we do instead

We do not offer this model and we will say so on the first call. Specialists are assigned to your roadmap, but management, quality gates and reporting stay with an Azendo service delivery manager. You set direction and review output. You never manage an individual.

If what you actually need is one contractor for six weeks, augmentation is the better answer and we will point you elsewhere.

What stands behind the person doing the work Both models put a specialist on your roadmap. Only one of them puts a programme behind that specialist, and that is what decides whether they are still there — and still improving — in year three.

Coordination hours a week falling on the client As the assigned team grows, staff augmentation transfers the hiring problem and keeps the management one. Azendo's estimate from our own engagements, at the midpoint of four to eight hours per specialist per week.

__Client coordination hours per week, by team size__
| Team size | Staff augmentation | Azendo managed service |
| ------------- | ------------------ | ---------------------- |
| 1 specialist | 6 hours | 2 hours |
| 3 specialists | 18 hours | 2.5 hours |
| 5 specialists | 30 hours | 3 hours |
| 8 specialists | 48 hours | 4 hours |

What the monthly fee actually covers Both models solve the employment problem. Only one of them solves the delivery problem, and the gap is where the hourly rate difference goes.

## Questions people ask.

What is the difference between staff augmentation and outsourcing?

Augmentation adds people to your team under your management. Outsourcing hands a scope of work to a provider who is accountable for the result. One answers who do I need, the other answers who will get this done.

Is staff augmentation cheaper?

Per hour, usually. In total, often not, once you count the management time it takes from your own engineers. That cost is real and rarely appears in the comparison.

Is Azendo a staff augmentation company?

No. We are a software development company running a managed delivery model. Specialists are assigned to your roadmap and accountability for their output stays with us.

Can staff augmentation become a managed service later?

It is a common path. Companies augment, discover the coordination overhead is the actual bottleneck, and move the same work to a managed arrangement.
