# thematic analysis.

Thematic analysis is a method for identifying patterns across qualitative data: coding extracts, grouping codes into themes, and testing those themes against the full dataset.

## Where thematic analysis fits on a long engagement.

The method exists to stop researchers finding what they expected. Systematic coding across the whole dataset, rather than pulling out the memorable quotes, is what distinguishes analysis from illustration — and it regularly produces conclusions the researcher did not anticipate.

Confirmation bias is the risk it guards against, and it is strongest when there is a hypothesis. Actively looking for data that contradicts an emerging theme is part of the method rather than an optional check.

## What an assigned team does with thematic analysis.

Analysis is consistently under-resourced. Sessions are scheduled and conducted, then synthesis is squeezed into whatever time remains, which produces findings based on the most memorable moments rather than on the data.
