# survey design.

Survey design constructs questionnaires that produce reliable quantitative data: unbiased question wording, appropriate scales, logical ordering and sampling that supports the conclusions drawn.

## Where survey design fits on a long engagement.

Question wording changes answers substantially, and the effects are well documented. Leading phrasing, double-barrelled questions asking two things at once, and unbalanced scales all skew results in ways that are invisible in the output — the survey returns clean numbers that mean something other than they appear to.

Sampling determines what the results can be generalised to. A survey sent to engaged newsletter subscribers describes engaged newsletter subscribers, and presenting those results as representative of all users is a common and consequential error.

## What an assigned team does with survey design.

Surveys are good at measuring the prevalence of something already understood and poor at discovering what you did not know to ask. Using them for exploration produces answers to the wrong questions.

Choosing the method from the question rather than from convenience is basic research judgement, held within the standards applied under [outsource ux design](https://azendo.co/services/ux-ui-design/).

## What we use survey design for.

* Questions that do not lead Neutral wording and balanced scales, because phrasing changes answers.
* Sampling stated with results Who responded made explicit, so findings are not over-generalised.
* Surveys used for prevalence Measuring how common something is, after qualitative work identified it.

## How survey design capacity is assigned.

Quantitative research is assigned inside design capacity, with method chosen from the question rather than from what is easiest to run.

## Roles we assign survey design for

* [UX Researcher UX/UI design](https://azendo.co/services/ux-ui-design/ux-researcher/)

## Service lines it sits in

* [UX/UI design](https://azendo.co/services/ux-ui-design/)

Capacity is agreed as a committed monthly capacity across a discipline, not per skill.
