# Stripe billing.

Stripe Billing handles subscriptions, invoicing, proration, tax calculation, dunning and revenue reporting, so recurring billing logic does not have to be built and maintained in the application.

## Where Stripe billing fits on a long engagement.

Subscription billing is far harder than it looks, and the difficulty is concentrated in the edge cases. Mid-cycle upgrades, proration, currency handling, tax by jurisdiction, failed payment retries and refunds each have correct answers that take real work, and getting them wrong means charging customers incorrectly.

Webhook handling is where implementations break. Stripe delivers events at least once and out of order, so a handler that is not idempotent will double-process, and one that assumes ordering will apply a cancellation before the subscription it belongs to.

## What an assigned team does with Stripe billing.

Dunning — the retry and notification sequence after a failed payment — has a direct revenue effect that nobody measures. A meaningful proportion of churn is involuntary, caused by expired cards rather than by customers deciding to leave.

Treating that as a product problem rather than a billing detail is where the return is, and it is scoped with the application capacity under [software development outsourcing](https://azendo.co/services/software-development/).

## What we use Stripe billing for.

* Edge cases handled correctly Proration, tax and refunds implemented properly rather than approximated.
* Webhooks idempotent and order-independent Handlers that survive at-least-once, out-of-order delivery.
* Involuntary churn reduced Dunning treated as a revenue lever rather than a billing default.

## How Stripe billing capacity is assigned.

Billing capacity is assigned inside application development, with webhook idempotency and dunning behaviour treated as requirements.
