# SQL Server.

SQL Server is Microsoft's relational database, common in organisations with a Microsoft estate. It carries a mature toolset — SSIS for integration, SSRS for reporting, SSAS for analysis — and licensing that makes capacity a commercial decision as much as a technical one.

## Where SQL Server fits on a long engagement.

Most SQL Server work is on systems that have been running for a decade, where the database is not just storage but the location of real business logic. Stored procedures holding rules nobody has written down elsewhere are normal, and they are the reason a migration proposal usually underestimates the work by a wide margin.

Licensing shapes architecture in a way it does not on open-source databases. Per-core licensing means adding capacity is a purchase, so query efficiency and index design have a direct commercial value. Edition differences also matter: features available in Enterprise and absent in Standard decide what a given estate can actually do.

## What an assigned team does with SQL Server.

The surrounding toolset is usually load-bearing and usually undocumented. SSIS packages moving data between systems, SSRS reports that a department depends on, and jobs scheduled years ago are all part of the estate whether or not anyone maintains them.
