# Shopify.

Shopify is a hosted commerce platform handling storefront, checkout, payments, inventory and orders, extended through themes, apps and its APIs. Shopify Plus adds capability for higher-volume merchants.

## Where Shopify fits on a long engagement.

The checkout is the part Shopify keeps, and that constraint shapes everything else. It is PCI compliant, converts well and is not yours to modify below the Plus tier — which removes a large compliance burden and rules out certain product ideas entirely. Knowing that before designing a flow saves a wasted design cycle.

Apps are how most functionality arrives and where most problems originate. A store with twenty installed apps has twenty scripts affecting page weight, twenty vendors with access to order data, and a set of interactions nobody has tested together. App audit is usually the highest-return work on an established store.

## What an assigned team does with Shopify.

Performance on a Shopify store is mostly an app and theme problem rather than a platform one. Third-party scripts loading synchronously and oversized theme assets are what slow a storefront, and both are within a merchant's control.

That work sits alongside the frontend discipline rather than inside a commerce specialism, which is why it is scoped under [outsource software development services](https://azendo.co/services/software-development/).

## What we use Shopify for.

* App estate audited Scripts and data access reviewed, which is usually the largest available improvement.
* Storefront performance recovered Theme and third-party weight reduced, since that is what slows the page.
* Custom logic through the APIs Integration with ERP and fulfilment without fighting the hosted checkout.

## How Shopify capacity is assigned.

Commerce capacity is assigned with the platform's fixed boundaries established at scoping, so designs are not produced for flows the checkout does not permit.
