# Segment Anything.

Segment Anything is a foundation model for image segmentation that produces masks for objects it was not specifically trained on, guided by point, box or text prompts rather than by a fixed class list.

## Where Segment Anything fits on a long engagement.

Zero-shot segmentation changes the economics of annotation more than it changes production inference. An annotator clicking a point and getting an accurate mask, rather than tracing an outline, reduces labelling time dramatically — which matters because annotation is usually the largest cost in a vision project.

It segments without classifying. The model produces masks but does not say what the objects are, so a production system needs a classification stage on top. Treating it as a complete solution rather than a powerful component is the common misunderstanding.

## What an assigned team does with Segment Anything.

Used as an annotation accelerator, it can cut labelling effort substantially while a specialised model is trained for the actual production task — which is usually faster and cheaper to run than the foundation model.

That sequencing — use the general model to build the data, deploy a specific one — is a practical pattern scoped under [ai engineering services](https://azendo.co/services/ai-engineering/).

## What we use Segment Anything for.

* Annotation accelerated dramatically Masks from a click rather than a traced outline, cutting the largest project cost.
* Segmentation without a fixed class list Objects handled that no training set anticipated.
* A specialised model trained on the output Production inference by a smaller, faster model built from the accelerated labelling.

## How Segment Anything capacity is assigned.

Foundation vision models are assigned inside AI capacity, most often as annotation tooling rather than as the production inference path.

## Roles we assign Segment Anything for

* [Computer Vision Engineer AI engineering](https://azendo.co/services/ai-engineering/computer-vision-engineer/)

## Service lines it sits in

* [AI engineering](https://azendo.co/services/ai-engineering/)

Capacity is agreed as a committed monthly capacity across a discipline, not per skill.
