# Power BI.

Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence platform, strongest in organisations already on Microsoft 365 and Azure. Its reach inside a business is usually wider than any other reporting tool, which is both its strength and its governance problem.

## Where Power BI fits on a long engagement.

Power BI spreads because it is already licensed and already integrated. Within two years a typical organisation has dozens of reports built by different people, several definitions of the same metric, and refreshes failing quietly on workspaces nobody owns.

Bringing that under control is most of the work. A shared semantic model, refreshes that are monitored, and a small number of certified reports replacing a long tail of personal ones — none of it is technically difficult and all of it needs someone whose job it is.

## What an assigned team does with Power BI.

Power BI spreads because it is already licensed, which means governance always arrives after the sprawl rather than before it. Two years in there are dozens of reports, several definitions of the same metric, and refreshes failing on workspaces whose owners have left.

Consolidation is unglamorous, continuous and exactly what a standing assignment is good at. Where the underlying numbers are the real problem, the work moves upstream to [managed data services](https://azendo.co/services/data-engineering/) instead.

## What we use Power BI for.

* Consolidating report sprawl A certified set replacing dozens of overlapping reports with conflicting logic.
* Refreshes that are actually monitored Failures surfaced to someone rather than discovered when a stakeholder asks about yesterday.
* Fixing slow reports Data model and DAX reworked where a report takes a minute to open and people have stopped using it.

## How Power BI capacity is assigned.

Reporting capacity is assigned under [data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/), or alongside warehouse work where the underlying data is the real constraint.

## Roles we assign Power BI for

* [BI Developer Data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/bi-developer/)
* [Data Analyst Data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/data-analyst/)

## Service lines it sits in

* [Data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/)

Capacity is agreed as a committed monthly capacity across a discipline, not per skill.
