# DAX.

DAX is the formula language of Power BI, Analysis Services and Power Pivot. It calculates measures over a tabular model, with evaluation determined by filter and row context rather than by cell position.

## Where DAX fits on a long engagement.

Filter context is the concept that decides whether someone can write DAX or only copy it. A measure produces different results depending on the filters applied where it is evaluated, and functions like CALCULATE modify that context. Without understanding it, correct-looking formulas produce wrong numbers in specific slicer combinations.

Performance follows from the model rather than the formula. A star schema with proper relationships performs well; a model with bidirectional filters, many-to-many relationships and calculated columns where measures would do performs badly, and no amount of formula optimisation compensates.

## What an assigned team does with DAX.

DAX is one of those languages where surface familiarity is common and real depth is rare. Reports that are subtly wrong in particular filter combinations, and nobody notices, is the normal failure mode rather than an unusual one.

Building genuine depth rather than pattern-copying is what the [Talent Success and Academy](https://azendo.co/talent-success-academy/) programme is for.

## What we use DAX for.

* Measures correct under every slicer Filter context understood, so results hold across combinations nobody tested.
* Model design as the performance lever A clean star schema, rather than formula tuning over a poor model.
* Time intelligence that is right Year-on-year and running totals handling partial periods and fiscal calendars correctly.

## How DAX capacity is assigned.

Power BI capacity is assigned under [data engineering outsourcing](https://azendo.co/services/data-engineering/), with model design treated as the foundation rather than the formulas.

## Roles we assign DAX for

* [BI Developer Data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/bi-developer/)

## Service lines it sits in

* [Data science](https://azendo.co/services/data-science/)

Capacity is agreed as a committed monthly capacity across a discipline, not per skill.
