# Airbyte.

Airbyte is an open-source data integration platform with connectors for hundreds of sources and destinations. It handles extraction and loading, leaving transformation to the warehouse, and supports custom connectors for sources it does not cover.

## Where Airbyte fits on a long engagement.

Extraction is unglamorous work that every data team rebuilds badly. Pagination, rate limits, authentication refresh, schema drift and incremental state are the same problems for every API, and a maintained connector solves them once. Writing them in-house is a standing maintenance obligation for no differentiation.

Connector quality varies substantially, which is the caveat that matters. Popular sources are well maintained; long-tail connectors may be community-contributed and lightly tested. Verifying a connector against your actual data volumes before depending on it is a short exercise that avoids a long problem.

## What an assigned team does with Airbyte.

Schema drift is the recurring operational event. A source adds a column, changes a type, or renames a field, and a pipeline either fails or silently drops data. The second is considerably worse, because nobody notices until a number is wrong.
