# accessible colour contrast.

Contrast requirements specify minimum luminance ratios between text and background — 4.5:1 for body text and 3:1 for large text and interface components at WCAG AA — so content remains readable for low vision users.

## Where accessible colour contrast fits on a long engagement.

Contrast is the most objectively measurable accessibility requirement, which makes it the easiest to verify and the most commonly failed. Every pairing can be checked against a number, so a failure is a fact rather than a judgement.

The tension with brand palettes is real and worth naming rather than glossing. Brand colours are frequently chosen for aesthetics before accessibility, and a primary colour that fails against white is a genuine conflict — not a technical oversight to be corrected quietly.

## What an assigned team does with accessible colour contrast.

Where a brand decision and a contrast requirement conflict, the useful response is presenting the trade clearly: what fails, what it means for users, what the legal position is, and what the options are. The decision is the client's.

Direction stays with you; what we answer for is that the assessment is accurate and the consequences are stated plainly rather than softened, which is the division set out in [how an assignment runs](https://azendo.co/how-it-works/).

## What we use accessible colour contrast for.

* Palettes checked systematically Every text and background pairing verified rather than spot-checked.
* Interface components included Borders, icons and focus indicators tested, not only body text.
* Brand conflicts surfaced honestly The trade presented with its consequences, for the client to decide.

## How accessible colour contrast capacity is assigned.

Contrast verification is part of design delivery, with conflicts between brand and standard raised explicitly rather than resolved silently.
