# Staff augmentation: what it is, when it works and when it doesn't.

Staff augmentation means bringing in outside specialists who work under your management, usually to fill a skills gap or handle a busy stretch. It's a useful model in the right situation. This guide explains how it works, where it fits best, and how it compares with a managed offshore team.

A one-to-one between a service delivery manager and a specialist.

## What is staff augmentation?

The short staff augmentation definition: a provider finds you a specialist and handles their employment and payroll, while you direct their work. You set their priorities, review their output and answer for the result. Once the person is in place, the provider’s role is mostly administrative.

That’s the core of the model, and everything people like or dislike about it comes from there. Companies use it to hire remote developers quickly without setting up employment abroad.

Providers in Eastern Europe often call the same arrangement [outstaffing](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/outstaffing-vs-offshore-staffing/), which is worth knowing when you compare quotes.

## When it works well

It works best when you’re missing a skill, and your team structure is otherwise in place. You know what needs building, an engineering lead has time to direct someone, and the work has a foreseeable end. In that situation it’s often the fastest and cheapest option.

If you’re comparing suppliers of this model, the differences between a [staff augmentation agency](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/staff-augmentation-agency/), a freelance marketplace and a managed delivery partner are covered in a separate guide.

## Where it gets harder

It gets harder when what’s missing is management time. If your leads are already at capacity, adding specialists who need direction adds work to their week.

Continuity is the second challenge. The relationship is with an individual, so their knowledge leaves when they do. Teams that augment for two years can find themselves back at the start after a few departures.

Accountability also stays with you. If an augmented specialist underperforms, you handle it.

Larger organisations sometimes set up an [offshore development center](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/what-is-an-offshore-development-center/) instead, which suits a bigger programme. Providers who sell augmentation usually market it as [IT staff augmentation services](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/it-staff-augmentation-services/), and the useful comparison is between models, then between vendors.

## The alternative to staff augmentation

Azendo works with the managed model. Your specialists work only on your roadmap, and an Azendo service delivery manager handles management, quality and reporting. You set the direction and review the output, without managing individuals.

It’s built for companies with a roadmap that keeps growing. Our guide to the [dedicated development team](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/dedicated-software-development-team/) explains how the model handles management, cost and continuity. If you’re thinking about adding a whole group instead of one person, [team augmentation](https://azendo.co/blog/engagement-models/team-augmentation/) is the same model at a larger size and raises the same question about who manages the team.

What stands behind the person doing the work Both models put a specialist on your roadmap. A managed team also puts a development programme behind them, which is what keeps them with you, and improving, in year three.

Coordination hours a week falling on the client As the team grows, staff augmentation takes on the hiring and leaves the management with you. Azendo's estimate from our own engagements, at the midpoint of four to eight hours per specialist per week.

__Client coordination hours per week, by team size__
| Team size | Staff augmentation | Azendo managed service |
| ------------- | ------------------ | ---------------------- |
| 1 specialist | 6 hours | 2 hours |

| 8 specialists | 48 hours | 4 hours |

What the monthly fee covers Both models handle employment. A managed team also handles delivery, and that is what the difference in hourly rate pays for.

## Questions about staff augmentation.

What's the difference between staff augmentation and outsourcing?

It adds people to your team under your management. Outsourcing hands the work to a provider who is accountable for the result. One answers 'who do I need?', the other answers 'who will get this done?'.

Is staff augmentation cheaper?

Per hour, usually. In total, often not, once you count the management time it takes from your own engineers. That cost is real and rarely shows up in the comparison.

Is Azendo a staff augmentation company?

No. Azendo is a software development company with a managed model. Your specialists work only on your roadmap, and accountability for their output stays with us.

Can staff augmentation turn into a managed service later?

Yes, and it often does. Companies start with augmentation, find that coordination is the real bottleneck, and move the same work to a managed team.
